Google voice app

I am going on vacation and my house/dog sitter doesn’t have a phone. I don’t have a land line so I installed google voice app on my old S7, no service/SIM card, just WiFi so he can call or text me if there is a problem. I’ve been testing it out, calls work but it doesn’t receive all the test texts I sent. Some were 30 minutes later and some not at all. Any ideas on a fix or another app to use so they can use the old phone to get ahold of me?

Set up Whatsapp using the Google Voice number?

No idea why it wouldn't be working (unless the phone has WiFi connectivity issues...make sure that it's not set to turn off WiFi while on standby). I use a Google Voice number for work all the time and it works without issues, except for MMS which have always been funky.

You can also try creating a Skype or Messenger account for the phone, or like the above post suggests, Whatsapp or Telegram.
