Google Voice text as data

Hi, I have Verizon wireless and I have all calls and texts go to my Google Voice number and then forwarded to my Verizon number and I receive them via my GV app but my bill still shows text usage.
What exactly do I need to change? I want to get rid of the $30/mo text package.

Are you giving out your GV number for texts or just your Verizon number? If you don't want to pay for texts, don't give out your Verizon number.

You need to give out your GV number only so you don't get charged for texts

If the texts are being forwarded from your GV number to your verizon number, then that's where the SMS usage is happening.

Have people text directly to your GV number and you text to them specifically using the GV app not doing any forwarding from/to your Verizon number and then you should be ok.

How do you forward a text from GV to an actual cell number?

I know you can have a GV text be received in the stock text msg app but that is not really being fowarded. But, does that count as a Verizon text?

That's what I'm confused about too. I have been using GV for a few months now but I'm still seeing a lot of texts on my verizon account...Everyone I know texts me at my GV number

Open the stock messaging app on your phone, do you see text messages in there? If so, what's happening is that Google Voice is sending you a normal text to let you know you have a new text or voicemail. You need to go into the Google Voice page (voice.google.com) and set it so it NEVER sends you a text message on your normal cell number. In settings, on the phones tab, uncheck both boxes for getting text messages on your cell phone.

I've always had unlimited texting so I never worried about it. Yes, it will count against your text limit. Make sure you don't receive GV texts via the messaging app. You can change this in your Google Voice settings. This should be done in addition to what Hallux described above.
