I was having the hardest time getting Google Voice to work. After I flashed to das BAMF Forever 1.0.7 I wasn't getting any GV notifications at all. It bugged me, so I fumbled around the Google Voice and figured out something.

1. Pick the little SPROCKET icon and pick "VOICE SETTINGS"

2. Make sure that "MOBILE: XXX-XXX-XXXX is NOT checked. (see attached image)

3. Make sure the following 2 are checked:
  1. Receive text messages on this phone
  2. Notify me of new voicemails via text

Is checked. I have Google Chat and that is checked.

If this is in another thread....sorry, I couldn't find it.

Hopefully this will help someone!

Good post. A lot of people have trouble when setting up Google voice.

But, wait, wouldn't that make Google Voice NOT call your cell phone if someone called you on your GV number?

Or are you just using GV as your voicemail service but having people call your cell number directly.

You can have google voice call your phone...you would set up google voice with your cell number as the forwarding number. Once verified anyone that calls your cell it will ring to your phone. Anyone that Calla you GV number will come up on the caller ID with your GV number so you know how to distinguish between the two

I have it set up to "forward" my calls to Google Voice. So if you where to call my cell number, it would ring and then say "blah blah google voice"...or something like that. I really have to do a custom message. It works perfect so far. I was getting frustrated to the point I was going to call VZW and demand free VVM....but, nonetheless, I got it working!

Excellent.

I only asked because, obviously, your instructions work perfectly for what you are trying to do, but would completely mess up someone who wanted to give out their Google Voice number for people to call them.

I just wanted to make sure that was clear to anyone who might have followed your advice, or you'd get "why isn't my phone ringing" replies. ;)

There is no checkbox to send notification via text message, only email. Why is my google voice setting page different than yours?

+1 nate...you are right. I never give out my GV number because I can barely remember my SSN or license number....LOLOL. With a mere "check" of the number box...it will go to VZW...and then I have to fight with the notification thing.

Conversely, I never give out anything except my GV number because my cell number has changed three times since I got it. I can't for the life of me figure out why number porting seems to work for everyone else, I always end up in the "exceptions" list.

My personal favorite was AT&T claiming they couldn't port my wife's AT&T number for a new contract with AT&T. They said if I went to another phone company and ported the number there, they could probably port it back after a few months.

The very first time I couldn't port a number, I figured "what the hell, I'm having to change my number with everyone anyway, might as well do it to GV right now so I don't have to suffer this again."

I generally recommend to most people when they get a GV number to start porting people over to it at their convenience. That way, if and when they ever lose their cell number, everyone's already on the GV # and life is good.

After all, if you dropped your Thunderbolt and it was destroyed, the ETF to cancel your current account would generally be less than the retail replacement cost of the phone. Then you sign up for a new contract with a new phone (and new phone number) and forward Google Voice to that phone, and you're done.
