Just switched over from Sprint to VZ for the Nexus. I thought I could get away with not paying VZ for visual voicemail and use google voice like I have been doing on my EVO. Can it be done on VZ? Its giving me an error message saying the carrier doesn't allow.....

Thanks

If someone calls your Google voice number it will. You have to have a separate number for Google voice on Verizon. Sprint allows Google voice integration I think. I use google voice just for texting and I have to use a different number than my cell phone number.

Not sure but I pushed through the prompts and it seems to be working fine. It says something about automatic configuration not supported on this network. However I had my wife call and she left a voicemail and it went to my Google voice just fine. Ignore the errors.

What else can you use Google Voice for? Can you set it up so that when you don't have reception, you get calls on your regular VZW number through Wifi on Google Voice?

Just goto voice.google.com and activate your phone #. It will give you instructions for a work-around with the voicemail settings on your phone. Works fine even if they call your regular phone #.

Wrong. Google Voice has ALWAYS handled my voicemail on my Android phones, and I have never had to give out my Google Voice number in order for that to happen.

Just did this and it definitely works. All you need to do is go to that site, link your cell phone number with your google voice account, and then go back into the phone's voicemail settings and it should go through without issue.

Here's where the settings are on that site:

1. Go to settings. Tap on it.
2. Tap on My Mobile Number. You should see your number there if you have already set up Voice on your computer. (You probably can do it in the app too, but its been forever since I did it, so I couldn't tell you)
3. Tap save.
4. Go back to the phone's voicemail settings in the phone menu, and tap on 'Voicemail service'
5. You should be able to set up Google Voice as your VVM provider now.

I have been using Google Voice on Verizon for a long long time now... Voicemail, google call back (add to your friends and family for unlimited free calls) unlimited texting, it's the sex

Yeah I guess I don't know enough to give advice about Google voice.Don't be a jerk. I never tried to use Google voice as my voice mail. I have a different number for texting with Google voice, sometimes one of my friends forgets and calls my texting number and it does the visual voice mail thing. Is there a way to use Google voice texting with my actual cell number without canceling my Verizon service? Mine is listing my texting number as my google voice, voice mail number? Even though on the site it's registered.

I had to log into google voice on the computer and tell it I switched to Vz from Sprint and it gave me a code to dial and is now good to go. thanks

The activation that is needed is to make GV your VM on VZW is *71{your Google Voice Number} SEND. You will hear some tones and the call will drop. Finis!

I set up my Google voicemail and it is working threw my number, but now I am unable to send texts from Google Voice, is there no way to get that feature back? I loved texting from my computer's browser while I was at work from MY number. I came from a NS4G (Sprint).

I too use google voice and during setup I chose not to use it for voice calls and ignored the message not compatible with Verizon. I use Verizon voicemail but I do have voicemail set up for those who call my google number and I don't take or hear the phone ring. Love that it sends text of message to email and you can read and listen to the message. If you need to uninstall the app and then put it back on the phone and setup the account again. Uninstalling is always the last resort when all else fails to work.
Good luck and sure you'll get it up and working.

The best method to use Google Voice is to only give out your Google Voice number as your phone number. You can set your phone to give the Voice number as your caller ID. That way you can move from carrier to carrier without having the awkward "move my phone number" experience.

All my texting and calls go through my Voice number.

I have no idea what the real number is on my phone, I have to look in the settings whenever I'm asked for it by Verizon.
