In the past, I have used Google Voice as my voicemail with my Verizon service, using my Verizon phone number. Evidently, things have changed in the last couple of years, as I can't get it to work now. Any suggestions?

Dial *71 and then your phone number including area code and hit send.

All that I get is a recording that says "your update cannot be completed". I give up.

i don't know if you've tried it yet, but when this happened to me i just uninstalled and reinstalled. On reinstall google voice suggested i couldn't use my gvoicemail with my regular number, but when people called it actually did go to gvoicemail. best of luck

Try this and see if it helps:

  1. Dial *73 to Deactivate Google Voice on your phone
  2. Uninstall the Google Voice App from your phone
  3. Restart your phone
  4. Install the Google Voice App through the Google Play Store
  5. Start the Google Voice App and go through the motions of setting everything up
  6. You may get a prompt that your carrier doesn't support automatic configuration. Just keep moving through the wizard.
  7. Then if it hasn't already done so through the app, dial *71 + "your Google Voice number"
  8. The phone will attempt to make a call and hang up
  9. That should hopefully work
