I was wondering if someone could point me toward a thread that details how to transfer apps/music/pictures/settings/etc from one phone to another. I've read a lot about Titanium but my phone isn't rooted. Just want to make the transition as seamless as possible. It's the same phone, just going from the old N4 to the new one.

The best you can do if you aren't rooted is to use Carbon to back up your data. To directly transfer the backup between devices, you need the $4.99 version, but you could back it up to your computer and simply manually move the backup to your replacement with the free version. Carbon covers apps and app data only, so I would also recommend moving all your /sdcard0 contents from your old phone to your replacement phone.

Any apps (and music, etc.) from the Play store should be automatic if you use the same Google account. So only worry about the rest.

Back up your apps using carbon back up. I would recommend just backing up app data as this will save time and all your apps will automatically start downloading when you log into your new nexus 4. All your sms and calls logs should back up with carbon as well.. Plug your device into a computer and copy everything from the sd card onto your computer minus anything you dont need anymore but make sure you copy the carbon folder. Providing you checked the back up options, your google account should restore your settings when you log in on your new phone. Let the apps install and copy back all the files onto your new phone. Then just restore all the apps in carbon with their old data. You should then have everything exactly how it was before.

Unrelated....

Did you get the new designed N4?

Ah. Just googled it. Mine appears to be the old design. No nubs present. Boo. I think the camera redesign may be bogus. The camera lens on my original phone is off-center and on the one I just got it's centered. My bet is it's a manufacturing anomaly.

Thanks everyone for the backup suggestions. Sounds like I'll be downloading Carbon tonight and making the transfer.

There's a new design?

Confirmed: Nexus 4 shipping with updated design | Android Central

damn it... you googled it as i was posting D: dang it

So if I got all of my apps from the Google store is it even necessary to use Carbon? Does Carbon add all the app data back as well? I don't know if any of my apps have any stored data honestly. If Google will restore my apps and phone settings, that's pretty much all I need. I'd just need to pull my pictures and my music on to my PC to transfer back over then I guess.

Yes as I said when you sign in to your new phone, all your apps will automatically start downloading onto your new phone. You only need carbon to transfer your sms, call logs and any app data you want to transfer over. For example, if you had a really high score in a game and you didnt want to lose it.

So which folders do I grab besides Carbon? Dcim, music, and pictures?

Yeah they are the main folders for most people, check if you want anything as well though.. For example whatsapp pictures, videos etc will be in the whatsapp folder

Youre not missing out on much from the new design. I have it and it makes no difference in sound when im listening to XM radio or when I have someone on speaker..........BOO me!

Alternatively, you could also create folders on dropbox and upload any local media you want saved. That way you would always have backups for them, as they wouldn't be on one device.

Well it appears that Carbon failed. I copied the carbon directory onto my new phone from my PC. But when I ran carbon on my new phone it says it can't find any backups on my internal memory. I'm not sure if it's because there isn't an SD card on the Nexus or what. I think I can do a phone to phone backup but I'd need to buy the full version for that.

Did you copy the backup from your computer to your phone? I'm sure you did that but you didn't mention it.

Also, did you copy it to /sdcard0?

I didn't copy it to /sdcard0. I just put it in the same place Carbon created it.

I also think Carbon sold my email address. It's the only thing I've signed up for in the last day and my Spam box has been blowing up ever since. I went from 1 spam email/day to about 15.

Hmm? did you download the real Carbon? None of this has happened to me or anyone else. Very odd.
