Got rid of my Evo, got an Epic.

I had an Evo since launch date. One of my friends and I just traded phones because he wanted an Evo and I wanted an Epic. So we did just that.

Let me just start by saying that the Epic, for me, is a much better device. I will miss HTC's Sense, and now that I don't have it, I can truly tell you that Sense makes a huge difference in how an Android phone works. It looks great, and adds functionality.

However, I have several gameloft games that I was unable to play comfortably on the Evo due to the cheap Qualcomm processor. Now, no lag at all whatsoever. Also, I love the screen. It's simply gorgeous.

The camera! Wow. HTC's Camera does not compare to the one on the Epic at all. The Epic takes much better pictures, and the video quality is unmatched by Evo. The Evo, compared to Epic, is like comparing VHS quality vs. Blu-Ray. Yeah. That big of a difference. I can't believe how much the HTC Evo camera really sucks.

I really like Samsung's skin, but I will admit that Sense is many times superior to TouchWiz.

I could go on with my list of comparisons, but I will stop and have the confidence to say this:

I think the Samsung Epic is finally a solid Android competitor to the iPhone.

Yup. I said it. The only reason I didn't have an iPhone is because it's on AT&T. I was never satisfied with the all around performance of any Android phone when compared to the iPhone until now. Samsung really did well with this. In fact, I have been doing nothing but bashing on iPhone users since I got my Epic. Everything works. I have not had a single app crash on me. The camera is just as good as the one on iPhone, if not better. The screen is awesome, not the high pixel density of iPhone, but this phone made me realize that color is what makes the difference. The screen is just as responsive as iPhone (which is a first for Android phones). the music quality is great. And the best part: my Epic is more powerful than any iPhone out there; Hummingbird really kicks everything out of the water.

My long 2 cents.

Now, I will also be buying a Galaxy Tab when it is released because of my satisfaction with Samsung. And I won't look at iPhones anymore like if I really want one. Now it's just another phone.

I can all but co-sign everything you are saying about the Epic. I too had the EVO since launch and strayed away for a moment to deal with the iPhone4. I quickly came back to my senses and returned to Sprint. The reason the camera is better on the Epic is because simply it was made by Samsung. Samsung makes digital cameras so its a shoe in that it makes a nice digital camera on the phone.

In defense of the EVO, some of the camera quality issues are due to the way the data is compressed. Yes, the Epic's camera is better, but Vignette would be a helpful add-on for the EVO.

Anyways, congrats and I hope you enjoy your Epic!

I too switched from Hero to Evo now Epic and love it. I really liked the others
coming from Palm Pre. I actually liked that phone but got tired of looking for
tweaks to make it perform the way it should.

I gave to my hubby and got this, we are both happy.

But, I actually like TouchWiz better, LOVE the screen, the colors in screens and
apps, it completely makes his phone looked washed out. Pics from his phone
pixelate on mine (my pics don't).

It is so smooth, responsive, and laid out better, I even like the Home and Menu
buttons better for my hand. If feels better, I am using without screen protector
which I really appreciate.

Yes, I do believe this is an IPhone killer. I actually ordered, used the IPhone for 3 days and returned - so much more costly, had the antenna thing going,
so restricted on minutes and data I felt like I couldn't use it - ATT plan vs
Sprint.

And I got it rooted, fairly easily, so can tweak if needed.

So if considering a change, its a good one, but so nice to have two good choices to fit personal taste.

my wife wanted an epic and i had an evo and so she got the epic on launch day. I played with it a bit and when i went to turn my evo on the colors looked terrible so the next day I had to get an epic and sold my evo for $300 cash and a 26" lcd tv so i made out pretty good IMO

Seems like a lot of you have had the same experience as me. I really think samsung nailed everything right on this one.

My one complaint is that the phone fels a little cheap. But the performance prooves it wrong!

Oh and I guess an evo and a TV put together are worth the Epic....maybe. lol. I would probably ask for an entertainment system along with that just to make sure to justify the trade. I mean come on.... its an Epic.

To the original poster you can get sense inspired widgets using launcher pro plus. Best $3 I've spent on android market.

Will that change anything from the Samsung launcher?

I would like to keep Samsung's launcher. I like swiping side to side, that way I have an idea of where the application is in case I forget the name of the application. Rather than scrolling through hundreds of apps in one continuous motion.

when I compared my Epic next to my coworker's EVO, the LCD on the EVO looks like previous generation screen. THe same screen that I had previously liked.. However after seeing the AMOLED, there is simply no comparison.

Also the pic/video is obviously a HUGE upgrade over the EVO.

That being said, I would like preferred a non-slider Epic.

I agree with some of your post BUT the camera and video camera on Epic is no where near as good as the one on the iP4, not even close as has been stated by pretty much every reviewer out there. Otherwise the Epic is fantastic, that is if I can get one where the whites actually look white...

Thanks for your post. I also did the switch and i love this phone. I sometimes miss the evo and stuff but your post made me feel more in touch with my epic. If that made sense lolz. As far as froyo it should be coming soon to the epic dont worry it will look just as awesome.

Looks like we can shake hands as we switch sides lol. I'm going EVO tomorrow, but I'll be sticking around the Epic forum WAY more often. I just can't leave this place!

True, but from my perspective after trying out both, they didn't differ much enough for me to be interested :)

isnt' the hummingbird basically the same processor as the new iphone?

They both use the same architecture from arm but after each individual company licenses that it is up to each company to make the processor there own way. Also samsung has a better gpu over the iphone.

Also for people who miss Sense, launcherPro Plus ($2.99) has a few widgets that are designed after sense style.

Can someone tell me what it means to be "rooted" and how you go about doing it? What are the benefits of it?

Thanks!

Just did exactly the opposite.

As I rely on my phone for work, I needed strong 3G, email that actually comes through in a timely manner, reliable GPS and the ability to upload photos and files without bogging my phone down.

Loved the EPIC screen but as long as they aren't side by side to compare, you really can't see what you're missing :)

Yeah. Very very true. However, those things all work well for me.

I do have to agree with jfenton. Those things are important for me. Not saying that the Epic's problems won't go away, I'm just saying that I had the Evo originally and I thought it worked out better for me. Still got an Epic in the house though, so I'm not really leaving.
