Got sick of waiting on Sprint, but a bit overwhelmed with all the info on Roms, etc.

I've finally gotten sick of waiting on Sprint/HTC to update to 2.1, and I think I've worked up the nerve to root/flash my phone myself. I've spent the last couple days reading up, trying to find all the info I need, but a lot of it uses specific terms and jargon I'm not sure on, and the information is spread out in a lot of different places... here's what I'm trying to find out:

I read the rooting guide at the top.. it looks pretty easy and straightforward, and seems to include a step that backs up my phone using something called nandroid. What I'm not sure of, is what is being backed up. Is the backup used later, if I need/want to restore my phone to non-root, non-custom ROM? Or will it restore my phone back with root? Or does it do something else entirely?

Mainly, I ask because it seems like all the current ROMs have the potential to have issues (audio cut-out, etc.) and I want to make sure that if I have to, I can go back to stock (is that even possible? Would I need to do something extra in the process to ensure I could?)

I'm also unsure which ROM I should be using (ie, which is the most recent, trouble-free one to use) I actually kind of like using the SenseUI, and most of it's features, but I really don't use the sprint installed programs. I DO use some of the HTC widgets/programs (namely calender, footprints, music, and peep) but if I could find alternatives I liked, I'm not TOTALLY tied to them... I just like them better than what I've seen so far.

Sorry if a lot of these are repeats of common questions, or whatnot... I've been trying to figure this all out on my own, and I'm pretty sure once I get into it more, I'll be able to hold my own... but as a first time out on the dance floor, so to speak, I just want to be super-cautious and sure of what I'm doing, so I don't ruin my phone.

Thanks for your time :)

The nandroid copy you make is the stock ROM WITH ROOT. If you ever need to take your phone in for service you can switch to this and the techs who probably won't check for root won't see a hacked phon.

I too need help rooting my phone. I have followed the instructions and have encountered problems EVERY step of the way. Perhaps they should make an easier way to do this.

What part do need help with?

installing your 2.1 option 4 rom. I placed the unzipped rom on the SD card (not in any folders), went to sdcard:update but I get this....

Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Cant open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory)
Installation aborted.

does it have to remain zipped?

I'm still trying to figure this all out myself, but I believe it does need to remain zipped. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Actually, looking at the log up there, I see it's expecting to find /sdcard/update.zip ... meaning it's expecting to find a zip file, and isn't.. so yeah, needs to stay zipped.

You are correct leave it as a zip file and put it in sdcard.Don't unzip

Sounds good, i've already restarted the phone to drop the zip on it. Will let you know if it works...

edit: cant get it to reboot in recovery mode again :(

**It makes a backup of your phone with root.

**The audio problems some have some don't.Im lucky and i don't have that problem. If you do then you could just use the nadroid backup to restore.

**The 2.1 roms were all made about the same time.(option3/4)

Hope that helps post if you have more questions.

Thanks :) I'll probably be taking the dive later today... wish me luck, lol!

Good luck if you have any problems just post about them,i should be on almost all day.If not pm me and ill get right back to ya.:D

Ok I got the phone into recovery mode and installed the 2.1 rom. Its still the process of rebooting, been about 12 minutes now. The screen keeps flashing between a white background with a green HTC logo (quietly brilliant) and the Sprint neon sign looking logo. Should I just wait or reboot it?

Ok, think I've got a good part of this all figured out... haven't started yet but will probably after lunch :D

One more question... I keep seeing mention of app2sd and stuff about partitioning my sd card... is this another step I need to do before installing a custom ROM?

If you see the sprint logo flash more then once its in a bootloop. You need to go into recovery and wipe (data, dalvik, ext)Then reboot it should be good then.

You can do it anytime before/after. You don't have to use it.If you have your sdcard partitioned then it'll do everything for you when you flash a custom rom.

2.1 is up and running, very nice! I did notice that my clock on the home page is gone though. Looks like i'll have to download a new one. :D

Alright... got root... downloading 2.1 Lite Op. 4 now... so far so good... not nearly as scary as I thought it would be! Will update once I'm totally finished.
