I've finally gotten sick of waiting on Sprint/HTC to update to 2.1, and I think I've worked up the nerve to root/flash my phone myself. I've spent the last couple days reading up, trying to find all the info I need, but a lot of it uses specific terms and jargon I'm not sure on, and the information is spread out in a lot of different places... here's what I'm trying to find out:
I read the rooting guide at the top.. it looks pretty easy and straightforward, and seems to include a step that backs up my phone using something called nandroid. What I'm not sure of, is what is being backed up. Is the backup used later, if I need/want to restore my phone to non-root, non-custom ROM? Or will it restore my phone back with root? Or does it do something else entirely?
Mainly, I ask because it seems like all the current ROMs have the potential to have issues (audio cut-out, etc.) and I want to make sure that if I have to, I can go back to stock (is that even possible? Would I need to do something extra in the process to ensure I could?)
I'm also unsure which ROM I should be using (ie, which is the most recent, trouble-free one to use) I actually kind of like using the SenseUI, and most of it's features, but I really don't use the sprint installed programs. I DO use some of the HTC widgets/programs (namely calender, footprints, music, and peep) but if I could find alternatives I liked, I'm not TOTALLY tied to them... I just like them better than what I've seen so far.
Sorry if a lot of these are repeats of common questions, or whatnot... I've been trying to figure this all out on my own, and I'm pretty sure once I get into it more, I'll be able to hold my own... but as a first time out on the dance floor, so to speak, I just want to be super-cautious and sure of what I'm doing, so I don't ruin my phone.
Thanks for your time
