GPS apps don't talk - usually

All my GPS apps are fickle. They talk but only rarely. Why?!

This includes Here, Wayz and Google maps (sideloaded).

Yes, volume is set to max.

Any ideas what's wrong? No problem with sound from other, non-GPS apps. Very frustrating!
