GPS crashing

OK, I've searched the forum, and didn't see this issue addressed.

the GPS on my Droid X crashes frequently. It will freeze, and I'll have to do a force close and a restart to get it going again.

At first I thought it was due to different apps being installed, but I've uninstalled the ones I thought were the culprit, and the problem persists.

I did have advance app killer installed, and this program seemed to cause the gps software to sut down, and then restart, so I quickly uninstalled it.

I have the car dock offered by Motorola, and it forces the car dock software to turn on. At first I thought the software might have something to do with it, so I tried the GPS outside of the car dock. Same problem. The program froze.

One thing I've noticed, is the Droid X gets hot when using the gps software. Not luke warm. Hot. So hot infact, that it is hard to touch. It could actually burn you if it had prolonged contact with the skin. Is it supposed to get that hot?

I don't usually use air conditioning in the car, and it is summer time, so maybe having it in the window, coupled with being hot, and using the gps is causing the overheating. I don't know.

Is anybody else having this issue? Are there any known software conflicts with the GPS? Will the update to Froyo help?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want this thing to eventually replace my Garmin, but with the crashing problem, I will have to buy another Garmin when my current model tanks.

Mine gets warm as well, but not so much so that I get concerned about it. It seems you've gone through the right troubleshooting steps...might have a defective unit?

Sporadic issue with mine somewhat similar to yours. While in the navigation app it will often back out of the app to the last screen I was in prior to starting the nav app. The app still runs in the background because i can get back to it by using the pull down notification bar. Powering off and back on usually fixes it. Recently i installed an app called Fast Reboot which simulates restarting the phone without actually powering it off. Next time the nav app acts up I'm going to see if Fast Reboot will fix it.

As for the heating issue I use a vent mount and the AC to keep it cool. Hopefully it wont get too hot during use in the winter.

I did read somewhere that it is the current version of google maps that is causing the issue. Someone said they uninstalled google maps and reinstalled the previous version and the issue went away. I don't have the details on how this was done.

This is the exact problem I had when I installed Advanced App Killer. The problem went away when I uninstalled it. I think your problem is related to something you've installed. I would try to uninstall some of the apps you've installed to see if that helps.

I had the gps turn off while in use. Reboot the phone and try again. It worked every time for me.

I have rebooted several times, and the problems persist. Someone mentioned earlier there might be something wrong with the new version of Google maps, but I'm pretty sure I had the problem before the update. I'm beginning to wonder if there is an issue with the gps software itself.

I decided to uninstall the latest updates, but it still crashed. I wonder what apps will access your location, and if that will cause it to crash. I think I'm going to uninstall everything, and reinstall only those items that don't access your location.
