GPS Lock

So, we all turn off GPS until we need it for a power savings. When I need to turn mine on for a map, it takes about 30-45 seconds to actually lock in. Is this normal, and is it the Sprint network, or a software issue with our GS2?

No one bothers searching or notices the suggested duplicate thread alerts, do they?

Mine gets a lock within 5 seconds. My only issue is that it never seems to settle into dead nuts precision. Always floats around about 30 feet.

,,,just to chime in on the "asking questions that have already been asked" thing --- it's really hard to sift through ALL the threads in a forum, sometimes it's easier for those of us who aren't here everyday to just reask a question and those willing and generous souls who read will sometimes paste a link to other threads with answers..... I only post this because I'm going to be guilty of same and it's not for lack of looking, it's for lack of time to look. (Or a quick search didn't generate an answer) :-*

PS, 30-45 seconds isn't HORRIBLE...... unless you're lost and need to make a turn asap, lol -- I was thinking the complaint was that it took several minutes to lock. I can handle 30-45 seconds...

You could make those posts stickied, flashing, and with very talented girls jumping up and down in front of them and there will be people who still fail to see them. It's just a fact of life.

But just to keep things relevant and worthy of posting, try turning off sensor aiding. That seemed to fix my GPS woes. I'm sure there is more but that one trick helped me.

....talented girls wouldn't get my attention on any thread ;-)

sensor aiding - I don't have the phone yet, but I will remember that trick, where is this setting found?

I suppose in your case, a bulging, veiny forearm with a bicep at the end pointing the way would do it... Haha

And look in the 'locations and security' section of settings, accessible by hitting the menu key when at the home screen. You will see it there.

It is not a Sprint network issue.

My Evo 4G would quickly lock on and perform flawlessly where this GS2 simply will not even pick up the GPS signal. Very frustrating. Bottom line is this: Do not rely on the GS2 to guide you via any navigation app. I'd hate to be in a strange city or someplace I don't know about and rely on it to get me to the nearest freeway or whatever.

I'm starting to really miss my Evo.

Please excuse me for quoting myself, but try it and see. Then come back with your results.

I need to remember to try this out when I'm out and about. Indoors my Google Maps locks on rather quickly, but then I'm sitting still. When I'm out next time I'll see if I have any problems.

Are you using Maps or one of the other apps?

Both maps, google nav and telenav work fine for me with very fast locks. I'm pretty sure any app that calls upon the gps will work fine for me.

Again, I haven't had problems ever since turning off sensor aiding.

SOME people; in fact MANY...might not have issues with their GPS locking on their S2; but I can tell you enough peoplebdo have a problem with it locking to where IT IS an inherent problem with the S2.

My E4gT locks on to GPS as fast as my Garmin 1350. (and I do have the sensor aiding ON.)

For me, GPS locking is hit or miss. Sometimes it will be near instantaneous (pretty much when I open Google Maps and hit the location button) and at other times it can take a few minutes (but typically less than 5 minutes). My Evo was generally better (more reliable locks) but there was a period of several months where it was consistently slow (also up to 3-5 minutes), but then it reverted back to quickly locking. I don't really know what the issue is, but hopefully Samsung can look into it (given past GPS issues with the Galaxy S phones) and issue a fix to address it.

UPDATE: i just tested sensor aiding more and it seems to affect locks when on wifi. I was just driving home today and fired up telenav and for the entire 2hr duration my phone never got a gps lock once! Suffice to say, I'm highly upset with Samsung.

So, what settings should I have set?

Use Wireless Networks
Use GPS Satellites
Use Sensor aiding

Right now, they are all unchecked because it looks like it saves battery. Would checking any of these improve lock or GPS performance and in what way?

Well, checking "Use GPS Satellites" will improve lock inasmuch as it won't even try to lock if you don't.

My GPS is never working correctly and sometimes have me a half of a mile off. I've tried all of the settings. I did notice that pulling the battery usually solves it for a sort time but it goes right back eventually. It is absolutely redicoulous if we need to do this to use the GPS function. Anotehr issue is that my phones heats up excessively with use...hmmmm.....

It locks without this setting...

Huh? No it doesn't. You turn all three of those off and you'll have no location data at all. Open google maps or any other application that wants location data and you're going to get a pop up message asking you to change your location settings.

Perhaps you're seeing a location in google maps because you have the cell tower option enabled, and mistakenly thinking that is in any way related to a GPS lock. Unless you enable the satellite option, it isn't.
