GPS reception & car dock position

Hi, all. I was wondering how sensitive the Evo's GPS receiver is, and whether it would be possible to dock the phone on the instrument panel, (or even lower) and still have navigation work correctly.

I assume that the GPS will get its best signal when the phone is set on the dash, or is stuck to the windshield, because in those positions the GPS can "see" straight up.

However, I played around with my friend's Hero while we drove around, and I couldn't really detect any difference when I held the phone in different positions.

Is one position just as good as another, GPS-wise?

(I don't have my Evo yet, but I'm researching dock options.)

I have the official EVO dock and I tested it out on my instrument panel.. I drive a 2008 Ford Taurus and I suction cupped it over the RPM gauge (With an Automatic Trans whats the point of the RPM Gauge?) and From the official dock it slightly hangs out past the edge of the dash and worked just great. No problems with GPS reception at all...
