GPS Usage + Battery Charging causes overheating

If im using the GPS NAVIGATION and the battery is low enough that it has to charge (65%), then it ends up over heating to the point that it will stop charging the battery in order to prevent anything bad from happening. With in the first half hour my battery stopped charging and the LED was flashing green and orange over and over again and refused to charge, thus draining the battery. I had to hold the phone in front of the AC for about 5-10 minutes before it would start charging again.

Has anyone else come across this issue with the incredible?

Hello, I have GPS/LOCATION on all the time as well but never had that problem.

I did however have the battery heat up quite a bit while on a charge using NAV the other day but never did it stop charging.

it happened to me when I had my GPS when I went down to Atlantic City. I had the charger on and when I took it out i noticed that it never charged, I also had pandora on as well

i used mine on a trip this weekend and it did get pretty hot. the charge indicator stayed lit but after several hours, i took it off the charger and i was at 60%. i dont know if it stops charging or if it's using more juice that it's taking in from the car charger.

My garmin broke on me, and I've had to use the incredible for nav as a truck driver,i have this issue and I usually roll my windows down, or turn on the a/c and it works for me

Sorry, i meant GPS Navigation via Google Maps.

Sorry for the confusion, i've updated the original post.

mine has done that to me twice now. once with the stock battery and once with the seidio 1750.

I was in that situation driving from LA to Vegas... I thought the phone was consuming more power than it was taking in, but I guess it might have just stopped charging due to the heat. This thing definitely gets crazy hot when NAV is running for an extended period of time.

Something similar happened to me last week. Granted, I was also streaming Slacker on top of using GPS nav and charging the phone. Here I thought it was just a substandard charger.

I'm trying to find a better location for my phone mount, but now I'm starting to think it won't make a bit of difference either way.

I have not had this issue. Although when Im using mine one of my vents is pointed towards the back of the phone in the mount.

Same problem on Moto Droid

I have the same problem on the Moto Droid. To the point that it has actually rebooted the phone.

Anyone noticed that while using GPS/NAV the device takes ALOT longer to charge? why???

Has anyone monitored the battery temp with a program like Juice plotter to see what the actual temp is when the battery charging shuts down? I have seen temp ~41C when charging but not navigating.

My DInc has gotten so hot to the point, where I'm afraid the battery will explode. It must be a issue with processing. The radio itself for location seems to stay nice and cool, once nav is used all the processing and refreshing the screen causes it to turn into a mini space heater. If you have a cover on, its worse as the heat disapates even slower. Forget having it in the window with the sun glaring in on a hot summer day.
