Greetings Folk!

I have had my EVO since Launch. I reciently seen the some vids and pics from my friend's Epic 4g and I must say that the quality is NO COMPARISON!

I love my EVO 4G but my pictures and Video quality really isnt all that good. Most indoor pictures come out GRAINY! and Video quality is subpar for other "New Generation" Androids......Epic, Droid X, Galaxy, ect.

I have a rooted Froyo 2.2 (build 3.26.651.6). I know with Froyo, they improved the Evo's video and camera and i was wondering if my phone is the only one that looks grainy or is this just what the phone has to offer.

All settings are set to highest quality btw....

Thanks for any Input!

Indoor low light videos aren't all that great. They would be so much better if the framerate didn't plunge. Actually, quality across the board could use better fps capture. Unfortunately there's not much you can do about it for now. As far as the pictures, just get familiar with the camera settings. You can really improve picture quality by simply adjusting white balanced ISO and stuff. What frustrates me the most about the picture and video camera is the camera is actually a REALLY REALLY good camera. Hell its capable of 1080p,720p@60fps and even 120fps using VGA, but the processor could never handle it. Low light quality should be immensely better but what it comes down to is htc is clueless on how to write a good camera and camcorder application. If the iPhone 4 can have such great low light quality and overall better video and camera quality there's NO reason the Evo shouldn't... especially since they both have the same damn camera. The potential is there. Just need someone to step up (htc maybe?) and put together an app that can really take advantage of it.

Ok,

I'll try some different things with the settings and see what comes out. I was wondering if it was because i had a rooted version and maybe i missed something from the official release. I'll youtube search some alternate settings too.

Thanks!

The trick I've learned is keep the ISO as low as possible. Even in low light conditions. ISO will allow the camera to see more light, but if you go too high that's when things look really grainy. So the trick is to find the right balance between setting the ISO high enough where you'll be able to see what you need to but low enough to keep the grain out. I've also noticed that the white balance can really help out too. I was near ground zero on Saturday night and took some pics. I'll post a few of them when I get back from physical therapy so you can see the difference

I'm really shocked no one has attempted to play with the camera and tweek the main program and/or app to see what they can do. They can tweek the fps on the CPU and move it above the 30fps cap but nobody has even tried for the camera. Maybe its more technical then making custom roms and performance kernals.

Is Vignette a app? I think I heard about it, I'm going to check it out. Thanks for the tip

Yep, It helped my Epic's picture get better than it was. The app helps the EVO's picture quality match the stock picture quality of the Epic. You want to know how good the Epic's photos are? Go check it out in the Epic forum. Now imagine your uncapped and rooted EVO on Froyo running super quickly AND having beautiful picture quality. Well, here you go. Enjoy!

most of the camera's result is dictated by the camera firmware. In the case of the EVO, it either has subpar hardware and/or firmware software that processes the image to a much lesser result than some of the other smart phones.

It's 100% software related. htc is clueless on how to write a camera/ camcorder app. It's the SAME camera as the iPhone 4 camera and I think we can all agree that the pictures from the iPhone 4 is the best quality around on a phone the Evo has SO much potential

Um no.. the iphone 4 has a 5MP backlit sensor. The EVO is entirely different. Where did you get information that it's the same?

I agree HTC does not know how to do camera software. I got curious after seeing the EVO pics, I looked at sample gallery for various HTC phones in the past. They all show horrible image quality.
