Hi Everyone,
I'm a 58 year old hearing impaired guy looking to buy his very first smartphone. Just so confused which brand and model to get. My needs are fairly simple... Must be able to use on the Sprint-Ting network. Must have good sound volume and audio quality. Must have good sized screen with nice color and clarity. Must take good photos, mostly for eBay. Must be able to text, email, browse the internet. Must be able to watch movies without interruptions. Maybe listen to some music. That's really about all I plan on using it for. Just basic needs. No games. No apps, etc. No shooting videos.

Looking to spend no more then $250.00 for this device. Would prefer something new or almost new. Looked at the Galaxy S4, HTC One, LG G2 or G3?. All have their advantages and disadvantages.

Was hoping a few of you could chime in and give me your opinions. Maybe there's something there that I'm not aware of that I should take a good look at.

Feel free to move this topic to another sections if it's warranted.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums! A new, capable phone for 250 (I'm assuming outright, right?) is gonna be a bit difficult to find, but the phones you mentioned are all pretty nice choices. The HTC One, however, might have the better audio output through the speakers, but if you'll be using this with earphones, then the difference is much more negligible (it does have Beats software, so it does sound better overall).

A fellow ambassador mentioned you might want to look at the Moto G for a basic phone with a decent screen and easy price tag.

Thanks for the welcome. Well, I've been browsing through eBay lately and have found some great deals on that website but you really have to be patient. The $250.00 is a general number and I can go higher if I find something better. It doesn't have to be new. The device could be "almost new" or in excellent condition.

What's the difference between a device that cost $300.00 new vs one that cost $600.00 new. Is it just the amount of razzle dazzle and apps that drives the cost up? I just need something reliable and meets all the criteria in my original post. I can't see me having much use for all these apps.. no offense.

As far as the Moto G goes, I don't think it's compatible with Sprint or Ting. I'll ask them tomorrow.

Most of the time the difference is the innards. Faster processor, better body, better screen. For some, a newer version of Android guaranteed (some older models have been neglected and not updated to the latest versions). But I'd say anything from last year should still be good. Heck, there are even some very good nearly-two-year-olds that are still good contenders.

This one is a very intriguing phone because it has top-notch specs with a very respectable price tag. It runs a customized version of Android (Cyanogen) and just getting one has been a hazzle (pre-ordering via invites, via contests, links, etc.) but well, there you go.

Hello Goldfinger321, welcome to the forums at Android Central! 🙋

I'm with Sprint, so, for that price I suggest a new phone with a 2 year contract.

The LG G3, Galaxy S5, Note 3 and Note 4 are the phones I recommend.

I personally have the Galaxy S5 and it's a great device!

Welcome to the forums. I am inclined to agree with Stargate. A device on contract is probably the best way to go, if that option is possible. Another choice would be the moto x.

Welcome to Android Central! The Moto G is still listed on the Sprint site as a prepaid phone, although it says not currently available online: http://shop.sprint.com/mysprint/shop/phone_details.jsp?deviceSKUId=80400392. You could check with the store.

Also, the 2013 Moto X works on Sprint, and it is universally praised. Considering the 2014 Moto X just came out (which is not Sprint-compatible), you're more likely to find a good deal on the 2013 version.
