Group messages lag

I'm in a group text with a few people and my girlfriend who's s5 is on the table next to me. Her notifications are blowing up but my phone is silent for a good 2-4 minutes until I see any notifications. 2 or 3 people reply, she gets them... Takes forever to get the same texts.

We're both using Google messenger. She's on lollipop, I'm on kitkat

Just to see if some 3rd party app might be causing some kind of interference. If messages come through quickly in Safe Mode, then something else that you installed might be the problem.

It seemed like they were coming in faster than her phone while I was in Safe mode. How do I find out what's causing it?

That's the tricky part. You may have to uninstall apps one by one and see how it responds in between. Concentrate on apps that might have something to do with messaging or calls.
