Groups in People App...what are they for?

I hope this is a really DUMB question...

I have created a group in the people app in hopes of using it for sms to the group. But...I can't figure how to sms or keven email the group. What am I missing?

I can't use handcent or any of the other 3rd party sms app's as they are known to send sms to the wrong contacts in ICS

I was just going to ask the same question. Here's what I found, someone please correct me where I'm wrong.

Handcent SMS tries to use both Google Contacts Groups and Google+ Circles but fails miserably, at least for me. It says all my groups but 3 have 0 members, listing 1 at 1 member when it really has 4. Shortly after visiting the groups screen (visible when you compose a message) it "unfortunately stops". They haven't replied to my support request for about a week.

The Gmail app appears totally ignorant of both kinds of groups. Ditto Messaging. Ditto Talk. Ditto Latitude (for restricting visibility of your location).

Messenger looks like it uses Google+ Circles. Of course the People and Google+ apps do as well.
