Gs7 edge fingerprint doesnt unlock phone

I just got the gs7 edge. Fingerprint reader works for my banking app but not to unlock the phone. Yes its turned on. I soft reset and wiped the cache. I reentered prints and updated the phone but still nothing

The fingerprinrt reader on the S7 is still not of the always on type. You need to turn the screen on first before it activates. What I usually do is just quickly press the home button to light up the screen, and wait for the reader to scan.
