GS7 Smart Switch Issues

I used Smart Switch to migrate my GS6 to my GS7. If you have a lot of apps, download them separately from the Play Store. Otherwise, it might take a while. While it did most of the work. I still had to switch to the Nova Prime launcher, redo all my desktop, apply my icon pack, and theme. Is this how it's supposed to work?

Yes. Nova is an app, with settings. If you restore from a backup, a lot of those things remain. Using SS is a zero level data transfer.

If you look in the settings of Nova, there should be an option to back it up. Which creates a user accesible file, if memory serves.

Correct. For NovaPrime Launcher, the back-up files for layout and settings are stored in the following path:
Phone>data>com.teslacoilsw.launcher>backup>

Incidentally, I've been having problems with backing up with SmartSwitch over the past 24 hrs, which is odd, given that it was working fine a few days ago. Only 1 thing has changed in between, as far as I can remember, which is that I installed the Verizon security update patch that was pushed out a couple days ago. I wonder if this somehow broke the current version of SmartSwitch?

Anyone else have this issue?

UPDATE:
Nevermind. Smart Switch still works after the Verizon update patch, but it seems to take A LOT longer. (The total amount of data being backed up hasn't changed much, either.) I try to use SmartSwitch and Helium every few days, rather than the Verizon cloud (from which it is very difficult to remove data/files once they are uploaded) or the Google servers (which don't back up many settings at all, in spite of claiming to back up Wi-Fi passwords, application settings, etc.).

When you guys use smartswitch to transfer from s6 to s7 does it give you the option to put photos on the phone or sd card.? Reason I ask is I have more than 32gb of photos on my s6 so they definitely won't fit on the s7 internal storage .

I'll be transferring from an S3 to 7E soon. I have Tbu on the S3 but that won't help the unrooted 7. Will SS work on that older device? I know I can download the apps again but data would nice.

Synergy ROM works so well on this S3 that there's really no reason to change but I've never gone so long.

I would manually copy the photos to your computer, figure out which ones you actually want to keep, and them copy them back to your SD card, either via USB 3.0 reader (which would be a lot faster for that much data) or via USB cable through the phone itself. I haven't used SmartSwitch to copy files to/from SD cards, since I can just drag and drop the entire "DCIM" folder and copy it to my PC's hard drive to back it up.

(I just tried to manually select a folder from a backup of an internal memory category (music) and restore it to my S7 via SmartSwitch. Even though I have an SD card installed, I was not given the option to select the destination of the "restore" option, so I suspect that you will not be able to use SmartSwitch to move your photos from your old S6 internal memory to your new S7 SD card. I would stick with copying the DCIM folder manually. It's a piece of cake.)

Thanks for checking.

I don't know if the current version of SmartSwitch will work with an S3. On the Samsung site, there are two versions of an app called "Kies" that I think could work, depending on the version of AndroidOS that is running on the S3.

RE: app data, I'm not sure if SmartSwitch copies application data at all. Given that your phone is not rooted, I would suggest Helium for backing up app data (at least for those that allow their data to be backed up). I use a combination of Helium and the SmartSwitch to back up my app data vs. contacts, txt msgs, call logs, system settings, etc., respectively.

Thanks for reminding me about kies I haven't played with that since s3 was new. Yea I can back up old phone with Ti but no telling how long S7/E will take. Bet there is some smart folks on it now.

Never heard of helium, checking.
