Guide to installing ROMs/Kernals?

So I am new to Android and have been contemplating rooting my TB to install a new ROM/ kernal, but I can't find any guides on what is required. Like do I need to choose a ROM and a kernal, or just one or the other? I'm vaguely familiar with the differences (from the dictionary page) but not enough to feel confidant.

So are there any good guides that could help me? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Some ROMS come with a custom kernel and some do not. In most cases, you do not need to flash both. I typically just flash ROMS.
