Gyroscope??

So yesterday, I threw the new Jelly Bean 4.2 Camera into my Maxx only to find out that PhotoSphere won't work correctly. I'm reading reports now that despite having a gyroscope installed, we don't have it enabled. Conflicting reports say the same may or may not be true for an NFC chip that we seem to have but can't use.

So my first question is this: Why in hell would Motorola give us hardware that we have no way of using?

And my second question: Is there a way through root that we can take advantage of this phantom hardware? Can we manually enable the gyroscope somehow?

In one word: Verizon.

Don't know... you might search for a custom ROM, but I've not heard of any.

I expected the answer to involve the "V" word. I guess my search for a new ROM is on.

UPDATE for anyone interested. Eclipse seems to have activated the gyroscope. Everything is working. I haven't flashed it yet, but good reports are coming.
