Had to hard reset due to reboot loop

My Evo has been running great since day one. Yesterday, I was at the Tech Museum in San Jose and suddenly got a weird error message on my phone about my account being wrong and it couldn't connect or something (I think it was error 67 maybe?)

So I decided to reboot the phone to see if it would clear up. That's where things got crazy. It started going into a reboot loop. It would get to the 4G screen, then restart the boot animation again until it reached the 4G again, and keep doing this over and over. I had to pull the battery to shut it off.

I tried again with the same results. I even waited 30 minutes to see if it needed to cool off, but no luck. Reboot loop every time.

I ended up having to boot into recovery by holding down the volume button while turning it on, then I was able to select to wipe the phone, essentially doing a hard reset to factory defaults. After that it was fine. Luckily, I had a backup using My Backup Pro so my home screens were saved (I didn't restore my apps automatically since I figured I'd get a clean start installing them manually).

Right before all this started I had been using Google Navigation, but it was fine for a while after. Not sure what the root cause was.

Anyone ever experience anything similar? Would hate for it to happen again.

I believe that Error 67 (Data call problem or something) is a network thing and not a problem with your phone individually. I was hanging out with a buddy and both of our Evo's kept getting the error at the same time. We just let it go and after an hour or so it went away.

As for the boot loop...no idea what caused that.

Not rooted so I can't check those logs. Next time if I get that error message, I won't try to reboot. I'll wait to see if it fixes itself. Maybe if you reboot in that state you get the loop. Not sure...just guessing.

Thanks.

I notice my evo reboots if I switch between apps to quickly. I was on the facebook app and then hit the home button and selected the internet app I did the switch quickly. I was able to get to google and search but when I tried to select a link it rebooted. sometimes it would get to the fancy 4g animation and reboot again and sometimes it would get to my home screen and then reboot. Its really annoying. it eats up my battery. i normally take the battery out for about ten mins. and it'll do it a few more times and it'll stop. i let it do its rebooting thing one time without taking the batt out and i took more than 30mins to come back to normal. (batt was full before it freaked out. batt was in the red when it came to) WTF!?

Actually, the reboot loop you described I encountered on day 1 (launch day, 9:14am... trust me, I remember...) about two hours after getting the phone. Back then, on the 3.29 software it has something to do with EAS account settings, and if there was the wrong sequence it would bug out and go into a reboot loop.

Just wondering, do you have the latest software update?

Ironically, after rooting and using community developed ROMs, I have found them to be more stable than the out-of-the-box Sprint/HTC stuff.

It might return if you were getting a reboot cycle. I've seen phones that were fine for a few days then bug out again. It's somewhat of a known issue inside Sprint. I believe the gps can cause a reboot as well in some situations.

I had a very simlar problem with my launch day EVO, and I called Sprint and they replaced it. Tried everything to fix it, and it continued to reboot randomly. It would sometimes get very hot to the touch as well. It would happen within minutes if I used navigation and GPS. Mine was rebooting randomly for a week or two before I finally got tired of messing with it. Called Sprint, and they sent me a new EVO.
