Handbrake Settings?

Hi,

Anyone use handbrake to convert videos for the galaxy tab 10.1? If so, what settings seem to work best for you?

I am wondering the same thing.
I started with the AppleTV 2 preset. Then in the Advanced tab, I set Maximum B-Frames to 0 and turned off CABAC Entropy Coding, 8x8 Transform, and Weighted P-Frames. Everything else I left at the default settings. This works pretty well with 1080 HD sources and results in file sizes around 3GB.

Using the Apple TV 2 preset resizes the movie to 1280 x 720, but keeps the same aspect ratio. The Advanced tab settings came from advice from the Motorola Xoom forums about how to avoid creating high profile HD video, which gives the Tegra 2 chipset problems.

And I have to say the Galaxy Tab's excellent screen makes it an awesome HD movie viewer! It is much better than my Alienware laptop.

I use DVDFAB. Best product out there by far. I just ripped a DVD this morning and converted it to MP4 in just under 23 minutes. Then all I had to do was hook up the tablet and drag the movie to it and within another 90 seconds, the movie was ready to view. Compare this to anywhere between 2-3 hours from other leading ripping software I've used.

Agree. This screen is awesome. Watching a 720P movie sure looks nice!

Did you purchase or is this free? I am checking their site and I see they have free tools but I don't think they convert do they?

FYI - The best settings I have come up with through trial and error are:

Encoder: H.264
Resolution: 1280 x 720
Frame Rate: 30 FPS
Video Bitrate: 2500 kbps

Audio settings are kind of personal preference - but mine are:

Encoder: AAC
Sample Rate: 44100 Hz
Channels: 2
Audio Bitrate: 128 kbps

Not saying these are the best settings but I've gone through a lot and so far I've liked these. File sizes range:

2:24 hr = 2.83GB
2:04 hr = 2.48GB
1:15 hr = 1.51GB
1:55 hr = 2.26GB
1:38 hr = 1.93GB
1:42 hr = 2.04GB

I've tested all on my 10.1 and they look great. These are all regular DVDs though and I haven't tried to do BluRay yet (I need to get an external BluRay player for my computer). Hope that helps!

I tried these and I must have messed up something because the playback was not good.

I went with more instead with a bit rate around 3000 and no issues. Plays and looks great and is around 2.5 GB.

What app are you using to watch the movies?

You can just go into your Gallery and if the movie / Video is in a supported format, you will see it in there. Just click on it to start playing.

DoubleTwist also plays back videos as well.

anyone figure out how to get the default player to scale to full size? Double twist does it automatically, but not the default player.

Really doesn't make sense to add more resolution to a DVD rip. This won't make anything look better. Just leave the DVD @ 720x480. You'll still get great quality, and you will get smaller file sizes because you are not adding bits that do not exist in the source. Now if you had a 1080p source then it would make sense to do it the way you are describing.

Personally I like using a constant quality setting of 19 instead of hard setting a bitrate. It's kind of like using VBR on MP3's, adding more bits to complex scenes and using less bits on others. For the audio I like increasing the bitrate to 192 and set Dynamic Range Compression to 1. I find this helps when watching a video in locations where it's not completely quite or you don't use noise canceling headphones.

Hi,

I hope someone can help me out. I've tried everything suggested to convert and transfer a DVD to my Samsung Galaxy Tablet 8.9 with no luck. I used Handbrake with the DVD43 Plug-In and was able to copy the movie to my computer (Windows 7 64 bit). The problem is I cannot drag it to my tablet. It will start to copy but within a few seconds an error message pops up: "Cannot Copy - The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected. Although this device supports video files, it does not support .m4v files. If possible, use a media program that can convert the file before copying it." Does anyone know what type of movie files Galaxy does support? Thanks for any ideas.
