Handwriting not converting to text

When I write text in the display even if I select the auto suggestion it will just display a filled in box that takes up the entire character display. So if I write a two and I see two as autosuggest and pick that, it still gives me a solid block instead of text. It seems to be reading that as the character, if I add another character it will form a continuous block across the page.
