Hangouts notification sounds stuck default

I'm using hangouts with Google voice and my SMS and voicemail notification sounds can't be changed. They say the different sound in settings but won't use it.

Anyone else seeing that?

Are you using custom sound files that you imported into the Notifications folder, or are you choosing sounds from the list that came with the 6P?

I've found that I can select any of the included sounds and they all work when I get a text message, but if I try to select one of my imported sounds, it defaults to the "Hangouts" sound included on the phone. It's strange because when you are in the Hangouts > Settings > SMS > Notification Sounds dialog, the custom sound does play correctly when you select it. But when you get an actual text, it defaults to the "Hangouts" tone. Leave a reply if you have the same experience.

OK, I found the answer for custom tones from KUMOKGB right here in this forum. To allow the Hangouts application to access any imported files in the Notifications folder, you must turn on the Storage permission for Hangouts. Settings > Apps > Hangouts > Permissions > Storage > ON.

That was the problem!

I have some custom noises I move from device to device and I leave them in the downloads folder, it's where I've always left them. The Nexus 6P is the only one that needed that permission turned on to work and it never prompted to ask.

It worked for me. Thanks. I don't remember having to do that originally but it works now so I will take it.
