Tried integrating my Google Voicetext messages with Hangouts but for me there is a show stopping bug. If you install the Hangouts extension w/Chrome browser on your desktop and you receive a text you will receive the notification on your computer but will not receive any notification on your Nexus 5 or other Android devices. Yes if you open Hangouts on your Nexus 5 you will see the message, but no notification. So if you walk away from your computer and stay logged in you will get no notifications of Google Text messages on your phone, tablet, etc. If I log out of the computer, Hangouts/SMS notifications return to the Nexus 5 and other Android devices. Back to using the Google Voice app on my Nexus 4, 5, and 7 until notifications show up on all devices when logged into the web.

Having the same issue too. I also noticed that sometimes on my end it looks like the message has been sent twice, once via SMS and once via "my google voice number." I received an SMS message when I wasn't on my computer overnight and in the morning there was no notification on my phone. So I just switched back to SMS rather than google voice until this is cleared up.

This may be a feature and not a bug. Hangouts (and other Google apps) is designed to sync notifications across devices, meaning once you view a notification on one device, it disappears from the others to avoid from giving you redundant notifications. When your message appears on your computer, it is counted as "viewed," and therefore disappears from your phone. I have not thus far found this a problem though. Just like regular notifications, it works on the phone as long as the chat window on the computer isn't left open (it can either be closed and minimized and you'll get notifications on all devices).

If you install the Hangouts Chrome Extension it runs Hangouts as a background service which means it is quite the hassle to make sure you are logged out of it on every computer when you walk away from it. For example I leave my house to go to work, I don't shutdown or logout of my home computers because I may be remoting back into them during the day. I'm logged into my work computer and I lock my computer but don't log out when I leave work. If I have even one computer running and logged in, I'm not getting my hangouts/text notifications on my phone. Unworkable.

I do have it installed as a chrome extension. And as long as I have the window ... Meaning the little popups at the bottom right of the screen... closed or minimized, the notifications seem to work fine for me on both devices.

I see what you mean, I tried making sure that the window was closed and then sent a text message to my Google Voice number. the first time I got the notification on the phones but also the pop up window opened on the desktop. From that point forward only the desktop got the notifications, not more notifications on the phones and tablet.

Yeah it opens it up so it thinks you read it. Try just minimizing instead of closing. For new texts though, once you reply from your phone, it will no longer pop it up on your desktop as long as Hangouts remains open on your phone.

I have this same problem-- getting notifications sometimes, but not other times. I am not clear on how to "have the window ... Meaning the little popups at the bottom right of the screen... closed or minimized."
