Hangouts

I know everyone says to use Duo over Hangouts for video calls, but I'm wanting to do something different.

I have the note8, and I have an iPad at home. Duo won't download on the iPad, so I'm limited to using Hangouts on my iPad for my son (who doesn't have a phone yet) to get in touch with me when I'm not home. The texting works fine and it notifies me, but when he tries to voice or video call me, the notification doesn't ring through on the phone. If I were to happen to be in the Hangouts app, I would see the bar at the top that said "ongoing call", and I can tap on it and it will connect our call, but it just won't ring in if I'm not in the app. Any ideas on this?

I was thinking at first (based on Google searches) that it wasn't notifying me because neither he nor k have a Google voice phone number, but when I think about it that doesn't make sense. The call connects fine (and I can call his contact info from my phone and it will ring in and notify him on the iPad). So it's just the actual ringing in on my phone that isn't working and I can't figure out why.

Maybe make sure notifications and in particular Hangouts notifications are turned on in your settings?

I double checked that, and everything is as it should be. It's just weird because the notifications are fine for the text - it's just the calls. I bagged the app for now and downloaded Skype. It's working great so far.
