Can you help? My son is going to South Africa for 2 years on July 7. He's supposed to bring an unlocked data phone with him to serve as a tether for his laptop so he can get dataservice there. He'll be in a very rural area in the south east (he doesn't know exactly where). We can't figure out which phone to get - this whole 'unlocked world GSM' and tethering thing is complicated, as each carrier uses different words to say the same thing. I'm a pre user on Verizon - which is no help at all.

Any suggestions for useful phones that AREN'T flashy?
