hardware button backlight

Just got my droid 2 yesterday, relatively few issues except one with the keyboard and softkeys. The backlight on them seem to turn on sporadically, not when you touch them or begin to type but maybe in the middle of typing, if at all. Through this whole message it has not turned on I closed the phone and put the lock screen on and it only turned on for a half second when I opened the phone. Is this some sort of feature? Are there ways to adjust it to my liking? Thanks in advance..
