Looks like the marshmallow update has completely stuffed my phone!!! Apart from some apps not working, I can no longer even connect the phone to my laptop.

Samsung drivers are installed, and even with Developer Options USB debugging enabled, neither mine, nor my wife’s laptops can ‘see’ the S5 !!!!! It charges from them ok, but whatever USB setting I select, the phone doesn’t show up in Windows.

Can anyone please give a pointer to fix this? I’m away from home and desperate to fix this

To connect to your laptop:

  1. Connect phone via USB cable
  2. Power phone on and enter PIN/Pattern to unlock if necessary
  3. Drag down notification bar on phone and tap on "USB for charging" (or, something like that)
  4. Tap on "File transfer mode"

You have to repeat each time you connect to PC.

Thanks but tried that. Most of the time now, when I plug in to laptop, I don't even get those options. Sometimes I do, but of the four options, NOTHING changes:-(
Worked perfectly before update too!

Can you look in device manager and see if it shows up there? Have you tried more than one of the USB ports on the computer or different cables?

Open your dial pad and type in... *#0808#

This will open the, "USBSettings", page and allows you to select your connection configuration, usually the one shown in the screenshot...

After selection, you will need to reboot your phone. This feature may be disabled by your carrier on branded minority variants.

Many thanks for replies.
Phone does not appear to show up in Windows7 Device Manage, but not sure exactly where it should show?
*#0808# does bring up a screen EXACTLY as the one above, with the same settings selected.
I've tried every USB port in THREE different laptops:-(
Was fine b4 Marshmallow update. Without being able to connect to laptop, I can't even roll back to Lollipop grrrrrr....
This is my 1st Android phone after being sick of iPhone trouble;-)

...and although phone starts charging when i plug in USB, I see zero sign of disc activity on laptops. I used to.
Can now get NOTHING from laptop to phone or vice versa:-(

Plug the phone in via USB, then open Device Manager.

Look for anything with an exclamation point, "Unknown Device", "Mobile Device", etc. Right-click and select the Uninstall option.

Unplug your phone (at the PC end, not the phone end), wait a few seconds, plug it in again.

Thanks. No unknown devices or marks in Device Manager and still a no go:-( My laptop is dual boot Win7 & Linux Mint, so tried that also, but Linux doesn't see it either.

Well, other than the (unlikely) possibility that you are trying to use a "charge only" USB cable (yes, such things do exist), I am tapped out.

Try AirDroid - it's a great product and there is no need to bother with the paid version, the free one works fine for drag & drop file transfers and all sorts of other goodies.

Ok many thanks for trying;-) Same cable as b4 so no idea. I MIGHT just try another factory reset later. Can't see it'll do any more harm than Marshmallow already has;-)
