so the volume button on the side is malfunctioning and i need to exchange it 2moro. what will i lose when i transfer to a new droid and put my sd card in the new one? they can transfer my contacts for me so i, not worried about them. but will my apps be ok and what about all my phone settings? any way to save them to the card also and have them work on the new one? thanks.

All of your apps are through the google marketplace so they'll be OK. Phone settings you'll most likely have to redo.

Yeah. Your contacts, apps, Gtalk contacts and emails should be fine. Settings you will have to redo.

I downloaded "My Backup" in Market place. It allows you to backup your settings onto your SD card, you might try that. It will backup most everything if you want to on your card.

I did have to exchange my droid for a battery issue, everything restored automatically except for the phone/app settings. I heard there are apps that will go the entire distance, however.

now i dont have to worry about it. if the settings are all i have to change, then thats fine. what about texts?

just make sure you use the same gmail account for the initial setup. I redid mine with a different ID and had to "repurchase" a paid item. I was in the 24hr return window for the first purchase though so it didn't cost me anything extra.

Just a heads up that paid software is tied to your user id and not the device. ;)
