Haven't seen this topic yet... Echo vs. Evo?

Hello all, I have been eyeing the Echo since first announcement and would like to get impressions from former Evo owners about which they prefer.

I may wait for the Evo 3D, but I have been itching to get a new phone. Don't get me wrong, I love my Evo, but I truly would like to experience a new phone!

I came from an Evo with an extended battery to the Echo. Have been using the Evo since it launched.

The Echo's winning feature of course is it's tablet mode. It really is like two devices in one. During the day, I find myself using just one screen like a normal phone. When it's time to sit down and get some work done I can flip the screen open and use it like a tablet. Really is a paradigm shift for phones, which I think is a reason a lot of folks are having a hard time getting it.

Only thing I really miss is the extended battery on the Evo and the fact that I didn't have to worry about battery life. Waiting for some type of extended battery to come out for the Echo.

Don't miss 4G, as I rarely used it.

I am on the fence about this device. Received it on Monday, which was easy to root and add tethering with absolutely no problem in a matter of about 3 minutes. The screen to me does appear to be much clearer than my EVO but I am having a really hard time getting use to the center line when in tablet mode. Also when you are in single screen mode, the screen seems a bit shifted over to the left too far but this is done this way for Tablet mode.

It is a big drop in screen size while in single screen view and it does seem a bit harder to type (again this is just me). Battery life, well I am glad they gave us 2 batteries cause 1 battery would not cut it!

The phone is a bit heavy and a thicker but that comes with the dual screen, so to each their own opinion on this one.

I do like the dual screen (refer back to my statement above-- Just cannot get use to the center line!), but its the thickness that is getting me right now plus the small 3.5 screen in single mode.

Missing my 4g, and missing the HDMI output ... but the build quality on the hinges are AWESOME. The screen movement feels very well built and you feel every click when you are going from either Tablet mode to Single screen mode.

I think that if there is a second generation of the ECHO and it lost some weight, shrink the center line, gained 4g, and HDMI or DLMA then I would probably go ahead with the next gen. For now though I am holding on to it till the Nexsus S 4g comes out then returning this device unless I change my mind before NS4g comes out.

echo is a good idea but i wish a better company would of made it like HTC...the hinge isnt stable already had two broken already with normal use...i love my evo but ill deff get the evo 3d

I completely agree with this. With tablet mode, you get double the resolution of a standard android phone. This lets you see much more content, and makes using apps like the browser, facebook, gmail much more enjoyable.

I had an EVO long ago, and am using the Thunderbolt now. However for the last 3 days I haven't even touched my Thunderbolt.

Typing on the virtual keyboard is my favorite feature. I didn't like to send long sms or emails from my Thunderbolt's keyboard, but on the Echo it's really usable.
It's huge when the phone is opened! It really feels like a hardware keyboard.

I do like the idea behind the Echo, its just....that processor. I really think they should have put in at least a 1.5ghz. All of the video I've seen of the phone in action shows it being laggy and shutter at times. With that faster processor it could have made two screens butter...imo.

All the videos I've seen always have Flash turned on, which is a huge soul-sucking monstrosity. Remember the Echo has the same class internals as the OG Evo and Nexus S.

You mean Nexus one?

Stock browser is laggy. I'm using Opera Mobile and it's smooth as butter.

I meant Nexus S. Hummingbird and Snapdragon have some tradeoffs (Hummingbird with a faster PowerVR GPU, while Snapdragon has a much stronger FPU), but they're all essentially Coretx A8-derived, single core, running at 1GHz with 512MB of RAM.

Very true, Flash makes the web creep at times. Even so, this phone is new enough that I do believe it warranted a newer processor than the OG EVO. The first run of Snapdragon's are almost a year old now...but that's not to say Kyocera wasn't already in the planning phase when the EVO launched. I could see that a reason, not wanting to have to report a lot of things to accommodate the faster chip. Or it could have been a pricing issue....but with it costing $450 brand new, I would have thought it would have at least the second gen Snapdragon.

I agree things could be better. My point was simply to show that the Echo is no slouch, even though its not the fastest of the recently announced devices.

Cost was probably the big reason for the same SoC. Screens tend to be the most expensive single component on a modern smartphone. Doubling them meant something had to give a little.

I just bought one and should receive it by the end of the week. My wife has a EVO so i will do some side by side pics.

Looking at the Sprint store online, they are trying to flog some manner of hard-shelled holster case when checking out. Did anyone spring for it, is the case any good?

Barring that, any recommendations for a decent third-party case?

There is a leather case with a belt clip, that's what I purchased and it works just fine.

I passed on the holster, in my experience they tend to get in the way a bit more.
