So I was driving down the road today and said ok Google and my car acknowledged that and Google was able to answer my request change the music, open Spotify, select music on Spotify, when Google Assistant is linked to your music account, under assistant settings, and any other question I had , also able to give me directions with maps by voice with request, my pixel 2 was in my pocket so I couldn't view the screen. Pretty Cool
So OK Google works excellent over Bluetooth, problem can only connect to one device at a time, connected to more than one, but can only acknowledge one.

8.1 brings hey google like the home. A small but welcome addition. Assistant is pretty epic.

I don't think that's 8.1 related. Phones without 8.1 are getting this option as well. Assistant is pretty awesome. Can do so much with it. Not a fan of hey Google on the phone though. Gets confused with my Google home.

Only became available to me when I downloaded the 8.1 beta.

You can't do any of those things if you're connected to the car though because Bluetooth is broken on these phones. OK Google works (if you can get close enough to the phone for it to hear you over the car) but triggering it any other way and it can't hear you.

I was doing ok google last night and my google home two rooms over was answering instead of my phone.

I was wondering about that. I was planning on putting the Google Home Mini in my living room but wondered when I said "Ok Google", which would would hear me? My phone right beside me? Or the mini 10 inches from me. I also have an Echo Alexa and a Dot. The Alexa sits by the living room/dining room and the Dot on my nightstand. All this in a 1-bedroom 1000 sq. ft. apartment. If AI ever takes us over, I'm in trouble.

You're right I assumed it was my car ,it's my phone in my front pants pocket with music playing car stereo, so I left my phone inside and went out to the car, close enough for Bluetooth to work and it would not.
Surprised Google can hear me with the phone in my pocket muffled like that

Yeah there's a fault where you can't query assistant over Bluetooth and Google seem to be implying you need a Bluetooth 5.0 headset or car for it to work (good luck finding one). A real blight on an otherwise excellent phone.

Playing with Google Assistant today and it was awesome

"wake me up at 9am tomorrow"

"drive to business x in city y"

"open spotify"

Really its just the small things.
the fact that it can be activated hand free(like when driving) and I don't have to press the squeeze button is amazing. There's at least 4 ways to activate google assistant. Its honestly the best app feature of the pixel 2 phones, and it should really help with the older folks to navigate through their phones easier.

I've only just discovered all the shortcuts you can add in Google Assistant to really personalise it. It makes it far more usable to me now. One example I set up is for fuel. For my work vehicle we can only use Shell stations so I set a shortcut for when I say "OK Google... We better get some fuel" it starts Google Maps navigation to my nearest Shell station.
Another is "OK Google... Save my sanity" and it automatically starts playing Mickey Mouse Clubhouse videos on YouTube for my crazy 2yr old daughter.
I just wish the "Hey Google" command would make its way to my phone now

I'm still learning what you can set the assistant up for in Google Assistant settings, linking different accounts.
Yeah hands-free in the car pretty cool

That's really cool!

I wonder if that will integrate with Android Auto. For example, while driving with Android Auto, can you say "OK Google... We better get some fuel" and have it highlight shell stations while sill navigating?

Doesn't it already do that? I haven't got my Pixel yet but on my old Samsung s7 Edge when navigating with Google Maps I've been able to say things like "OK Google, is there a McDonalds on my way?" and it shows me the McDonalds' that are the least diversion away from my route.

Yeah, I've done that many times, I'm just wondering if assistant will make use of the shortcuts we create while navigating using Android Auto. I'll give it a try later today...

Try it in a car with Android Auto -- it is pretty fun :). It uses the mic in my truck to listen for "OK Google" to do things for me.
