So after hearing and reading about countless people having issues with the Touchwiz OTA that came out today (8/5/11) - I thought I'd create a spot to compile "fixes" that have worked for others that I know and myself personally.
Warning - this list looks insane at first glance, I wouldn't DARE try and explain why some of the things that appear to have worked (did) - I'm just listing them and giving others a place to list their experience and potential work-around's.
A good clean reboot never hurt no-one: My friend Mike called me this morning and claimed he was having trouble updating his GT 10.1 - I know Mike pretty well and...well Mike's not a "turn-er-offer." This is a man with a iPhone3gs that he got on launch day that has never once been rebooted or turned off. Similarly, Mike admitted that since he bought his GT 10.1 - it had never once been reset or powered off. I advised him to do so, and glory be - when he downloaded the update the second time - it worked just fine
Changing the Wallpaper - I know how it sounds, but this is from my personal experience - I had attempted to reset my tab in the wee hours of the morning to no avail and frantically rushed to find a solution. I don't remember where exactly that I read it - but someone suggested that I reset my home wallpaper to a Samsung default wallpaper. After dealing with Keis and it's thousands of failures...at 1am - you're willing to do just about anything...I reset my wallpaper to one of the Samsung defaults and whammo - update goes just fine. I have no explanation other than maybe, because of the assinine way that HC forces you to crop images (your own) in order to set them as wallpaper - maybe it's tying up additional memory resources somehow. Bottom line - I don't care...it worked.
Side Note: Within about 10 seconds of successfully applying the update I reverted to my previous wallpaper...I hate the samsung default images.
Patience isn't just a virtue...it's a necessity: My sister's bestie (GOD I HATE MYSELF NOW) was having trouble with hers as well. She stopped by the office as she'd read on my Facebook that I'd updated with some wierdness. I asked to see her tab, which she's very protective of, and instead of handing me the tab - she showed me how she was trying to apply the update. She let the update download (which you will have to do multiple times if you have a failure by the way) - and as soon as she got the option to click "install" she clicked it. Amazingly, after .000023 milliseconds of nothing happening she exclaims "SEE" and starts clicking on links and swiping through menu's to try to update again. I theorize that this is the same person who stands at a copy machine and when, by some miracle, her facsimile isn't instantly produced...she hit's "COPY" 4000 times and is amazed that she gets a bible printed out. I took the tab, downloaded the update - then clicked install. The next step was important...I slapped the crap out of her hand when the update didn't start immediately and said "give it a sec" - within about 20 seconds the "Your device will reboot" option appeared and she looked at me like I was made of magic
When in doubt - read the instructions - Know that message that stated "Please remove any icons with live contact information or Pulse feeds from your home screens?" Yeah...those comedians at Samsung didn't pull that from their collective rectum - it's going to fail your update
If all else fails - Do a factory reset. I know, it sucks...you love technology - be prepared to bend over and grab your ankles every once in a while...at least the GT 10.1 will buy you breakfast and tell you your pretty tomorrow morning.
Hope this helps - feel free to add any other helpful tips - but let's keep this thread clear of the "Man it's so stupid I have to do ____________." - we know it's stupid...and now we know you're stupid - so let's be clear, if you violate this rule be prepared for public ridicule!
