Having Problems Connecting to my Computer

I have seen that many people have this problem and have been looking for solutions online for about a month with no luck so I thought I would post just in case there is something in my case that makes the solutions different.

So I got a White HTC Vivid about 2 months ago, the first few times i connected it worked fine and I put all my music on it. I didn't connect it again for a few weeks, then when I went to add more songs to it wasn't showing up on my computer and wasn't giving me the option to do disk drive (I already have "ask me" and the "automatically do disk drive set").

I have a 32GB SD card and have used at least 4 different cords and my brother IPhone works fine with my computer. I also tried it today on my friends computer and it worked. When I plug it in the computer doesn't make the noise it makes with all my other devices when plugged in but still charges the phone. I went to the AT&T store and they didn't know either. I also have the new system update if that helps.

Sorry for the long post, hopefully I can find a solution because other than this I love the phone but am getting quite frustrated. Thanks in advance everyone!

hummm.. do you have usb debugging off? when you plug it in do does windows recognize it or unknown device?

Having the same problem.

Please elaborate on "usb debugging" - what is that? Is it on the computer or within android?

Just got into the forum. I'm also having this exact problem. Visited the AT&T store and they had no clue. Definitely interested in hearing a solution for this.

Settings > Connect to PC. Here you can set a default action when you connect and also set up Always Ask.

Settings > Develop Option. Here's where you'll find debugging. Personally I've never seen that it makes a difference one way or another, but YMMV.

Neither of these help. When I plug in my USB cable, I do not get the option to select Disk Drive and eventually the phone goes to USB charging. And I have the Connect to PC set to Disk Drive and Ask Me.

Still hoping to find an answer...

does windows device manager show an error for that usb? Maybe the driver got corrupted .

start/ r click computer/ manage / click on device manager and look for any errors on USB controller

I checked the USB controller as you suggested...no errors listed. I then connected my external harddrive I use for backup. No problem, the computer saw the device and I could access the contents.

Since other people are having the same problem, it can't be a local PC problem. It must be something associated with a recent update or basic phone problem. I've only had the phone for a week, so it could be me. But it worked once!

I do have some tech-savvy guys at work. If there's no resolution, I'll take my own computer back to the store, show them the problem, and ask them where I turn to get it solved. Since they're just sales people, they won't really be able to help directly.

I have:

Android Version 4.0.3
HTC Sense Version 3.6
Software number 3.26.502.56.71ORD

Fixed!

I powered off the phone and selected the Restart feature. That cleared all apps. When it rebooted, there was some kind of Android software.

Reconneted using the USB cable...Bob's Your Uncle. I chose Disk Drive and was able to access the phone through my computer.

Must have been some kind of residual app running.
