Having some problems rooting...

I just received my evo about 2 weeks ago and decide to root. So I plug my phone into my computer and nothing shows up in the notification bar that I want to charge only or plug into computer...I also tried it on my friends computer and nothing happens. Went into settings as well and tried to do it that way but still nothing.
