Having trouble backing up my phone contacts to my Google account

I am currently running 5.1.1 on an AT&T Note 4 and it won't back up my contacts to my G-Mail account. I also use AT&T Address Book to back up my contacts and that works fine. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure that this would even work or be a good idea, but have you tried to remove your Google account and re-add it?
