I downloaded the update file and also renamed it like the Sticky says. I also connected the phone through USB to get the files and folders up for it, problem seems to be getting the sdcard folder to come up on the computer.... or I have no idea where it is.

Another thing, do you have to unzip the file before putting it onto the phone?

I was in the same boat last night when I rooted.

You need to change your USB mode in the applications settings on you phone. Change it to "Mass Storage" mode and then connect to your computer. When it connects, go to your notifications and click on the USB notification and tell it to "Mount". Two drives will pop up on your computer, and you will see the sd file folder in one of them. Copy the update.zip to it, and you are good to go. No need to "Unzip" on your computer first.

Hope this helps.

Yes, connecting for file transfer is a two-step process... but I actually like it.
With my old Blackberry, every time I plugged my phone into the USB to charge, I had to close the pop-up windows in XP that ask me what I want to do with the device, and with the storm I would get that multiple times. It was annoying.
Now I only get the popup when I actually DO want to do something with the device.

I think I got it to work: when you turn it off then turn it back on while holding the volume buttons, its supposed to say "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!"? If so, is it normal that it takes a bit of time? It's been on this screen for a few minutes now... wondering if I bricked it or whatever.

Do you have it attached to the USB at the same time as doing the Vol+Pwr reset?

I don't think you are supposed to...

If you're ready to give up, you may as well boot it up with the vol up/dn + pwr again, without it plugged into teh USB...

I think it actually froze on me... it wouldnt let me turn the power off so I just took the battery out and started it back up again and loaded everything back up with no problems- which is always a good thing.

Right now its back to the way it was before I attempted the root, service is fine, everything is still there.

Okay.

That's good.

The root is very simple, just follow the instructions step by step, and don't assume you are supposed to do anything that is not explicitly stated. ;)

I don't know what harm it can do, but I wouldn't do the vol up/d + pwr boot up while connected to the USB.

remember the zip folder goes in the root of the internal SD card (root folder, meaning the very top level, i.e. not in any subfolders)

Okay then, I saw the update file that I put into the phone... and saw that when I changed the name of it to "update" that I actually typed in "update.zip" so maybe that could've also been a problem.
