Having trouble rooting

Okay then, I saw the update file that I put into the phone... and saw that when I changed the name of it to "update" that I actually typed in "update.zip" so maybe that could've also been a problem.

The actual file name needs to be Update.zip.

If, in windows, you have the "Hide extensions of known file types" setting on, then it will look like it is just called "Update" with no ".zip" but it actually is "Update.zip".

Now, if you have the above setting set, and it shows it named "Update.zip" the actual filename might be "Update.zip.zip" which will not work.

It is best to go to a Windows file window, and go to Tools > Folder Options... Selet the "View" tab, and remove the checkmark out of the box labeled "Hide extensions for known file types"

I got it. SDK looks really confusing though... even looking at the step by step thread.

I downloaded and installed it, opened it up and there was nothing there but a a little blank screen for putting in commands I suppose.

Installing the SDK is easy the easy part.
It is the software development kit, so there is a ton of neat thing syou can do with it (if you are a developer).
The tough part is getting the the commands down correctly in order to do allow side-loading apps.

I just want to enable sideloading and get rid of the AT&T apps. The commands don't seem to be working though.

Yeah I had some trouoble with the sideloading at first, but that was due to BusyBox not being installed/updated properly.
Make sure you run it after installing the APK and then hit the "install" button in the app. If the Install button is greyed out, then it is installed correctly.

Are you having any trouble connecting to the computer with the USB after rooting? I have two separate computers I have tried to connect to, but won't connect to either any longer. Any ideas?

That might be what happened with me, in the cmd it came up saying it couldnt find the device or whatever.

Make sure you mount the phone after connecting it via the USB cable.
A little notification will come up at the top left of the pone when you connect, then you need to open that notification and tell it to mount.
