having trouble with email to iPhone users

Hi,
It seems that when I email certain, but not all, iPhone users that letters in the email get 'garbled'. For example, the phrase ' so they don't get drenched' gets received as 'so they don't get drenched'. The email is being sent through a Pop3 server. It doesn't seem to happen if I email from my yahoo address.
I have verizon wireless for service and their tech support couldn't help. They suggested I download the app k-9 email.
