Hawei P30 lite, selecting ringtone from "music on device" yields stuck screen on loading

I have a lot of music on an SD card. I'd like to use one track as a ringtone. But when I go to settings, and choose 'music on device' the screen keeps loading and loading forever.
I am aware I can use an app for that (to make any MP3 a ringtone) but it's just weird this happens.
Any idea what it could be?

Can the SD card be read by other apps? If not, then I'd suspect a corrupt, defective, or counterfeit card.
