my understanding is I need an att phone in order to use the hd voice feature. I had an axon 7 that supports hd voice but didn't work because att blocked it. So if i were to buy a galaxy s8 or LG G6 unlocked would it work then?? or would it have to be carrier branded??

With AT&T it has to be carrier branded for HD Voice, Wifi Calling, etc. to work.

The only known Unlocked phones that AT&T supported with VoLTE was the HTC A9 and 10 and it was VoLTE only. They still didn't get VoWifi or RCS treatment. Also don't get the idea that the support continued into the unlocked U series. Neither the U Ultra or U11 have VoLTE with AT&T.
