Hdmi out connecting at 576p

Ive just purchased a Nexus 10 and am enjoying my first tablet but when connecting it via hdmi out to my Pioneer Kuro tv, the tv is reporting a connection at 576p and the picture is all grainy.
Is this a settings problem with my Nexus, the Tv or the cable?
Any help would be much appreciated so I can cease being a tablet numpty.

What application(s) are you using to view video?

It is probably your TV which does not support full HD (1080). It does not know how to "translate" the hi-res signal from the N10
Try connecting to a full HD TV

I was trying out some HD vids from YouTube to start with and have also used MX player. Youtube was especially grainy.
I'll have to try it out on a friends full hd tv and see what result I get.
