Headphone controls suddenly not working

I use wired Bose sport earbuds made for Android devices and can adjust volume, pause and skip songs. Today out of the blue, the headset stopped working with my Google Pixel XL. I came home and plugged in my earbuds to another phone and it worked fine. I got on the phone to Verizon tech support and 2 hours later, they decided to send me a new phone. We went as far as doing a factory reset. Another issue with the Google Pixel that occurred for the first time today was the HD voice which relies on the 4G LTE data, made my audio sound on the listener's side like I was raking tin cans. I had to stop and sit in one place to get enough signal to complete the call. I was attempting to use the WiFi calling.
