Headphone jack not working

Just recently got kitkat, so I don't know if that could be an issue. I've used my earbuds before and while I did kind of have to work them a bit, they did work. Then tonight they wouldn't. Tried a second set and after a bit, started working, but unplugged and plugged back in and nothing again. Is there a special kind I'm supposed to be using?

Once in a while I have to clean out the jack on my HTC one (I work construction) I do it with a slightly damp q tip

Make sure jack is seated as far in as possible. Need to have the full length of the jack inserted. I've seen the insulator on some jacks contact the case and prevent full insertion, resulting in intermittent sound.
