Headphone + no inline MIC = Mute?

While listening to music on my Fascinate, I was using regular ear-buds with no inline MIC, I got a call and answered it, heard them talking but when I responded they heard nothing! I unplugged the headphones and they were able to hear me again. After testing multiple times I found that anytime I have regular headphones plugged in (with no inline MIC) the built-in MIC is disabled. Headphones with an inline MIC works fine... am I doing something wrong or is this really the way it's working? I'm really hoping this is fixable

Why not use headphones with an inline mic?
Because headphones with an inline MIC usually sound like crap... and I really like my current Sony ear-buds. Plus every other smartphone I've used (Droid X and iPhone 4 included) has allowed this to function, e.g. while using ear-buds with no inline MIC the built-in MIC continues to work. On the Blackberry it would work after a state-change, switching to headset mode.

I can understand already having a decent set of buds you like, but I will say the Apple in-ear buds with mic work really well IMHO...

The Apple ones sound good but for me I have to push them into my ears to hear bass. Also after about 15 minutes of having them in my ears start to hurt. I like the Sony's because they're rubber and they go into my ear some, and they don't hurt.

Just did a quick google search, and you can actually buy a mic adapter for headphones, so that could be a route for you to take...

You might want to email Samsung I am sure that would be an easy fix just a few lines of code to change.

I have the same problem when connected to the MP3 input in my car. The iPhone and X worked fine like that. I could hear the caller over the car speakers and they could hear me through the phone mic with it in the center console. Worked great as a hands free. There should be a setting to enable this function IMHO.

I'm glad someone else is annoyed by this... I just emailed Samsung Tech Support to see what they say, hopefully it's an easy fix and we don't have to wait until Froyo for it to be fixed...

jerks... I'll call them tomorrow...

no

Your solution does not work for everyone. I don't use headphones, I use auxiliary inputs. They need to have a repair for this problem that doesn't involve jerry rigging a $300 phone. I have also noticed that there is intermittent static on the speakers when you are charging via usb while plugged in via auxiliary input, regardless of weather or not music is playing...almost as if there is a short in the hardware... Hopefully the media dock will alleviate this problem. Anyone else notice this with the fascinate?

Yo Triggermaster. If you have a specific problem search the forum, if you don't see it then post a thread about it, that way we stay on subject ;) Jeremy1960 had the same complaint you did, he used to use other phones in his car and they worked fine. Hopefully Samsung tech support has a better response for me tomorrow.

Happening on a Fascinate I got today, I use the AUX in my car for phone calls, I'd rather hear it over my speakers so an inline mic isn't happening.

A lot of people have been asking about this issue in various threads so I thought it would be a good idea to bump the thread dedicated to this because clearly it's an annoyance that is frustrating a significant number of people.

I did notice this thread on another forum in which they found a workaround for a different phone, and I don't know if anyone that has experience in altering these things would have any idea how to apply it to this phone...?

Also just to be clear, the reason I'm most annoyed with this is because I use the aux jack in my car for the MP3 player, and I used to use it with my previous phone to make hands free calls as well, but this phone seems to mute its onboard microphone even though there's no microphone input from the aux cable.

I also noticed that when I'm plugged in but not making a phone call, the mic is still enabled for voice search, so that means it's definitely not a hardware issue. The phone software disables its onboard mic during calls only.

Edit... This fixes the issue externally

Is this just with phone calls? I just plugged my SteelSeries Siberias into my Fascinate and did a voice search (no inline mic). Worked fine. Haven't tested it with a phone call yet though.

Yes, it is only with phone calls. I did the same thing with the voice search.
