Headset Wiring

I'm trying to use the headset jack to connect to the more powerful stereo amplifier for so that I can hear the thing. I've already made a cable and discovered that connecting the output wires to the input wires was pure folly and has no useful effect at all. I have found useful information about how this interface works but there's way too much long winded elaboration on proper screwdriver operation instead of schematic diagrams.

Audio output is the tip and first ring from the tip. Ground isn't the shell, it's the next ring up.
