With a watch, the most important factor is that the band be kept snug enough to ensure good skin contact and minimal movement on the wrist. Personally, I stopped wearing a wristwatch a decade ago and, though I have tried smartwatches (twice, a few years apart), I find that I can no longer tolerate wearing one regularly and certainly not snug enough to allow the heart rate monitor to work reliably.
