My S4 gets quite warm. Just now hadn't played Real Racing 3 for more than three minutes when it got quite warm on the screen and back casing near camera. I don't want to damage my phone, but is this at all normal? my iPod touch did this occasionally, but doesn't seem to take much to get this quite warm

EDIT: Total play time is actually about eleven minutes
EDIT: Tried again, turned off S Beam, GPS, Smart Stay, Air Gesture etc, but left WiFi on and it seemed better. Case temperature didn't seem as hot, screen was still warm and played for about 20 minutes, used about 10% of battery rather than 20 or 30% like yesterday

Its pretty normal since its plastic it makes it feel a lot warmer than you iPod.

What is the point in ramming all that power in there if it's just going to get so hot after 10 minutes. Screen and back were 37 Celsius

Quad cores are going. 37 C (98.6 F) is nothing. It is hotter than that outside in Dallas right now.

Just have fun gaming the S4 can take it.

You should be fine playing games on it. I recommend turning down the screen brightness to about 50% or less.
I've done 2 hours straight of dungeon hunter... not sure how I managed that.

I was about to recommend lowering the screen brightness and doing what you can to keep power low. I wouldn't worry too much though - the S4 can handle the betting. It'll take more than that to mess it up.

Last 3 days have been 100F+ weather near Dallas. Won't do much at all to the smartphone.

Maybe heat is normal for phones now. This is my first smartphone and first phone with any real power so it's completely new to me. I did have Play Store still open though and Air Gesture, Smart Pause, Air View, Smart Stay, GPS, WiFi and 1 or 2 other things on when I booted RR3. I noticed:

Real Racing 3: Made my phone the hottest, screen even heated up. Took about 11 minutes or so to get here with all the other stuff above running
Iron Man 3: Second hottest. I'm not sure if the screen got warm
Temple Run 2: Mild/barely warm
Extended multi tasking: Eventually got warm
Extended use doing phone like tasks: No heat

Think I gamed for a total of 30 to 40 minutes and used about 30% battery doing so. So, it's probably just load

Almost forgot, also becareful when gaming and charging your phone.
This goes for just about every smartphone though. From the Iphone 4S to the 5, to the HTC One, to Moto X.
All of them got warm when charging, and got quite hot if you gamed while charging.

Mine gets to 138. I guess all phones get hot but I've been wondering what is the threshold before there could be damage?

Mine doesn't heat up when charging, just when gaming. Turning off the extra stuff seemed to help a bit, even though antivirus said temperature was about the same (case didn't feel as hot though)

I heard that early batches of the s4 get hot but the new ones dont.

The screen temp was the #1 reason I had to return my S4. It got too uncomfortable to play games. The area on back around the camera got warm but the screen was what really bothered me since I cant slap a case on the screen to help shield from the heat. Hope the note 2 does not have this issue.

Games will heat up the phone. No matter what setting you have on or off..

It is like a PC. My video cards idle at 40-42 C. I start a game? Within 2-3 minutes they can jump to 80-85 C. This is due to the power increasing in he cards as they ramp from an idle mode to a full 3d ready mode.

What are the normal operating temps for this phone anyway? Mine idles at 27 C and reaches 37 - 38 when I play RR3

Accepatable operating range for a smartphone CPU is around 70-120?f. There is no fan and there is no heatsink to dissipate the heat, it's just a chip sitting on a board, with no ventilation. And its very possible that running the device at a high enough temperature for a long enough amount of time could actually cause your chips to become desoldered.
