what does it mean when a redish orange triangle with an exclamation point appears on top where text messaging goes? Is it an app? Is it a way to have texts go through a background page?

It's a generic warning notification. If you're trying to text, it usually means your message wasn't sent successfully, perhaps because of poor signal.
